City of London to launch exhibition revealing 'environmental improvement' proposals

The City of London is to unveil plans to help transform Cheapside into a major shopping district.

The local authority said it would launch an exhibition and public consultation on 15 July, setting out proposals for the £3m-4m “environmental improvement” scheme.

Included in the strategy are plans to widen footways, improve paving quality, plant trees and alter the road junctions.

The plans are part of a wider regeneration scheme that will see 167 new retail units created in order to attract the weekend shopping crowd.

The Cheapside retail initiative, which is scheduled to complete in 2012, includes developments designed by Jean Nouvel and Atelier Foster Nouvel at each end of the street.
