Scheme includes high speed link between Doha and Bahrain

Qatar has announced a £27.5 railway development, which will include a metro for its capital Doha and an inter-Gulf network and rail freight lines.

A high speed line between Doha’s Education City and Bahrain will also form part of the scheme. To be completed in 2017, the line will have trains travelling at up to 350 miles per hour, shrinking the travel time between the two locations to 51 minutes. The link is aimed at attracting Bahraini students to study in Education City.

The plans were revealed yesterday when FIFA officials visited Qatar to discuss it bid to host the 2022 football World Cup.

The rail project, which also includes light rail systems within the new city of Lusail and links between the new airport under construction at Doha and the capital, would be 90% complete in 2012 if Qatar were to win its World Cup bid, or 2026 otherwise.
