Budget reaction: President Angela Brady criticises lack of Budget measures on sustainability

The RIBA has slammed today’s Budget as a missed opportunity to “lay the foundations for the green economy”.

President Angela Brady said: “Government should act as a catalyst for sustainable construction growth where the market is failing to deliver.

“Today’s Budget was the opportunity to kickstart a major programme of capital investment in new affordable homes and to lay the foundations for the green economy - on both counts the Chancellor has failed to deliver.”

The government did however reaffirm its commitment to zero carbon homes from 2016, which was cautiously welcomed by experts.

But UK Green Building Council chief executive Paul King called it “a very solitary” boost for the green economy.

Summing up her thoughts on the Budget, Brady said: “We weren’t expecting a game-changer budget today, but this country desperately needs one.”
