Collapse of housing block roof during torrential downpour leads to evacuation of 30 elderly residents

More than 30 people have been evacuated from a block of flats in Yorkshire after the roof collapsed in torrential rain last night.

The flats, in Filey, North Yorkshire, were among a host of homes and businesses abandoned after flash flooding left some areas submerged under 1.5m of water.

North Yorkshire police said that nobody was injured in the roof collapse, which happened at a block of flats occupied by elderly residents. The residents have now been relocated, and housing and environmental health officers are providing advice about clean-up operations.
