Sarah Brown's edited highlights of Gordon's achievements are sweet but probably won't woo the voter

Labour might not be sure if they love him or not, but at least Sarah Brown is behind her man.

Although to be honest, the Prime Minister's wife's very sweet video of her husband's supposed greatest moments had something of the air of an embarrassing present your spouse might inflict on you at Christmas.

Like that homely knitted jumper with the reindeer on it, the speech probably seemed a great idea when discussed over a cup of tea and toast in the Brown household, but was a huge gamble when taken out into the public arena.

Would this display Brown's supposedly missing 'emotional intelligence'? Unlikely – any couple I knew who made films of each others best achievements probably wouldn't go down as emotionally responsive – more people to swiftly cross out from my address book.

And would it help to silence those who think he's achieved nothing of value since becoming Labour PM? Well, most of the moments on show were from his time as Chancellor, and, as one cynic next to me pointed out – without being entirely unfounded - 'that's Blair's Britain.'

But that's kind of the point. Brown was a huge part of the Blair years, to state the obvious – and his political career hasn't been just about Northern Rock and the 10p tax. It won't hurt him for his party to be reminded of that – although I wouldn't like to place a bet on how long it will take for Brown: the unauthorised version to pop up on YouTube.

And the helpful seminars Labour have been running all week on using that technology will probably help supporters of the rebels to give it a go – which is a great example of equal opportunity for all. Brown should be proud.
