Memo reveals impending departure of GOE director general and recruitment of managing director and financial director

Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell is to overhaul the governmental team responsible for delivery of the Olympics.

A confidential memo seen by the Evening Standard reveals that the Government Olympics Executive - the body that advises ministers on Olympics issues - is preparing to recruit a managing director and a financial director from the commercial sector.

Some senior Whitehall officials currently handling the London Games will be redeployed, according to the memo. The memo praises the director general of the GOE, Jeff Jacobs, but says he is leaving to pursue other opportunities.

The overhaul comes amid mounting criticism of the government’s management of the Olympic construction project.
