Six architect firms chosen for the new Turner Contemporary Art Gallery in Margate

Kent Country Council has announced the six main architectural practices short-listed for the Turner Contemporary Art Gallery in Margate.

The Turner Contemporary forms a major part of Margate's ongoing plan for regeneration, which includes the refurbishment of the Winter Gardens into a major conference and concert venue.

KCC cabinet member, Mike Hill said: "We will be involving residents in the design process for the Turner Contemporary and the whole major regeneration project in the area."

Amongst the winners is the leading Danish architects, Schmidt Hammer Lassen, the only international firm to make the shortlist. Four of the remaining architectural firms are London-based, with only one local firm making it through to the shortlist.

The decision was made following a recent competition that attracted significant international interest. Final interviews to determine the winner will be held in July with the appointment made shortly thereafter.
