Sandtoft has introduced the Rivius clay roof tile, which is manufactured to look like traditional slate.

The company claims the new generation of clay products can offer the same colour and riven surface as quarried slate. Compared to natural slate, installation and material costs are lower and its interlocking design and open gauge mean it is quick and easy to fix, it says. The large format tile requires 10.5 slates per m2.

The authentic slate appearance is achieved by a fired-in ceramic coating, riven surface and carefully dressed edges.
