Transport for London has unveiled plans for the £425m Thames Gateway Bridge, designed by Marks Barfield Architects, which is to span the Thames between Gallion's Reach and Thamesmead. TfL estimates that improved access could create the potential for up to 26,000 jobs in the Gateway. The river is 650 m wide at this location, and it is proposed that the bridge would be about 50 m high so that most ships could pass underneath it. Lifting bridge options were considered but rejected because of the delays they would cause users of the bridge. The earliest possible opening date would be 2010.
