Government responds to business report

The government has launched a sustainable procurement action plan to ensure supply chains and public services meet sustainability targets. The plan, together with the Treasury’s recent ‘Transforming Government Procurement’ report, is the government’s response to the recent business-led Neville Simms report on sustainability.

Today’s plan establishes lines of accountability and reporting in a bid to ensure supply chains and public services are increasingly low carbon, low waste and water efficient, and deliver wider sustainable development goals. The government is also publishing a set of mandatory environmental product standards to ensure departments procure the most sustainable commodities.

Environment secretary David Miliband said: “The Government accepts the Task Foce’s challenge to ‘use its immense buying power’ to make rapid progress towards our goals to move to a low carbon economy.”
