An east London housing association has withdrawn plans to build the capital’s first “Ecohomes excellent” residential development after a backlash by local residents.

Swan Housing Group has confirmed that it has gone back to the drawing board with its eco-tower plan for Alberta House – a council block north of Canary Wharf in east London.

The scheme was withdrawn after the submission of a petition by residents of Ontario Tower at Ballymore Properties’ recently completed New Providence Wharf development. They complained that the new scheme would obscure their views of the Thames.

Swan was planning to provide 173 homes, 70% of which are affordable, in three blocks ranging in height from six to 18 storeys.
