The £1.5bn regeneration of Elephant & Castle in south London was finally cleared to begin last Friday after six years of planning and several rejected schemes. Two housing association consortiums were selected by Southwark council to build 1000 homes on 15 sites around the area. These will house residents moved from the first tower blocks to be demolished on the Heygate Estate. The two teams are Urban Choice (Family HA and Affinity HG) and a consortium of London and Quadrant, Wandle HA and the Guinness Trust. The first homes will be completed in spring 2006.
