RMJM architects is designing the village centre for Palm Jebel Ali, one of two man-made islands under construction off the coast of Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. The design concept for the 469,236 m2 village centre uses aspects of Islamic geometry and organic structural form. The centrepiece (pictured) is inspired by the water lily. The flower concept is used in the design of shading elements that radiate from a central opening structure, creating a shaded dome during the day and opening up at night to allow the sea breeze to pass through.
