Housing developer People for Places has submitted £140m scheme

Housing developer People for Places has submitted a £140m regeneration scheme for an 800-home scheme at a disused shipyard in North Shields.

The scheme at Smith’s Dock, which hopes to connect the Fish Quay and Royal Quays communities along the Tyne, will be considered by North Tyneside council.

A pedestrian boulevard and cycle paths are proposed along the bank to link up the riverside.

Nigel Brewer, project director at People for Places, said: “This application marks an important new phase in the history of Smith’s Dock. This is the start of its revival, where the site will once again become a destination for people to live, work and socialise.

“We are keen to get the economy moving. The economic benefits of this site will inevitably extend into the wider Tyneside region.”
