David Adjaye behind radical refurbishment of Birchfield Estate for Urban Splash and Birmingham City Council

Urban Splash and Birmingham city Council have announced a joint venture to redevelop three tower blocks on a rundown council estate in Birmingham

Recently-honoured architect David Adjaye will draw up plans for a radical refurbishment of 270 flats on the Birchfield Estate in Perry Barr in the north west of the city.

The plans form part of the first phase of a wider regeneration in the Birchfield area.

A spokesperson for Birmingham Council explained why it decided not to demolish the towers.

She said: “The decision to retain these architecturally significant tower blocks, which have unparalleled views across the City, was taken in response to the need for a step change in the supply of new homes. It will provide a catalyst to creating increased confidence in the housing market in the North West of Birmingham.”

Urban Splash is already working on two schemes in Birmingham, the redevelopments of the Rotunda and Fort Dunlop.
