Current operator, Arrow Connect, missed out

Nottingham council has selected the Vinci-led Tramlink consortium as the preferred bidder to build an extension to the city’s tram network with an estimated £530m value.

Tramlink is set to be awarded the contract over Arrow Connect, the current operator of the existing tram.

The announcement comes after the government confirmed funding for the project following a council costs review.

Once completed the tram system will extend to Chilwell and Clifton.

Construction is expected to begin in the autumn with the new lines scheduled to open in 2014.

Jane Todd, chief executive of Nottingham council, said: “We received two very strong bids but Tramlink Nottingham has come out
on top.
