The new national stadium at Wembley looks certain to go ahead after the developer offered £17m to improve the surrounding area.

As Building revealed last week, Brent council is recommending planning approval for the scheme, following talks between developer Wembley National Stadium and the government taskforce set up to regenerate the area around the stadium. The taskforce has agreed to make up the shortfall of the £30m demanded by Brent council as part of a Section 106 agreement.

A spokesperson for Brent council said of the latest developments: “From our point of view, we’re happy and we will be recommending planning approval.”

Councillors will make the final decision at a planning meeting that has been scheduled for 1 June.

A spokesperson for Wembley National Stadium said: “Brent council is making optimistic noises but we’ll wait for the planning meeting later this month before we crack open the bubbly. It’s not over until the fat lady sings.”

If permission is granted, work will start this year and finish by 2003.
