Wembley contractor receives huge boost as judgment gets under way in £50m legal battle with steel contractor Cleveland Bridge.

Multiplex has come out on top in the early stages of the judgment in the £50m legal battle with steel contractor Cleveland Bridge over the Wembley Stadium project.

Mr Justice Jackson today told the Technology and Construction Court that CBUK was in breach of contract by walking off the site on 2 August 2004.

The central part of the case was over whether a £32.66m payment from Multiplex to CBUK was a final payment (as CBUK allege) or a loan to be paid back to kelp CBUK with cashflow.

The verdict is still being heard but Justice Jackson appears to have come down on Multiplex's side, agreeing with Multiplex that it was for cash flow only, and that the Australian contractor was entitled to claim it back.

Jackson told the court that Multiplex had acted legally.

He said: "Multiplex's strategy, while ruthless, was law."
