Piping contractor goes into receivership after withdrawing from stadium project.

Wembley subcontractor SGD Engineering has called in the administrators after a contractual dispute with Multiplex that it claims cost it £2m. It is alleged that the £4.5m pipe-working contract – from which SGD withdrew before completion – had overrun by more than 40% because Multiplex kept changing the specifications as work was being done.

Despite its insistence that the withdrawal of the engineering firm will not impact on its timetable, Multiplex has lodged a claim against SGD for breaching its contract. According to a report in today’s Guardian, MJN Colston is likely to be contracted to complete the 15% of the work still to be done. Multiplex remains adamant that the stadium will be ready to host the FA Cup final in May 2006.
