Construction to start later this autumn

Willmott Dixon has nabbed an £18.6m deal to build a leisure and sports centre in Morpeth, Northumberland.

The job for the county council will see a new 6,000sq m facility built consisting of a six-lane swimming pool and a learner pool, a four-court sports hall, spectator gallery, spa, gym, library and cafe.

The three-storey building will replace an aging leisure complex called the Riverside Centre. It has been designed by Newcastle-based GT3 Architects with DPP on the project team as planning consultant.

The scheme, which was granted planning permission by the council in June, is due to start construction later this autumn with completion scheduled for spring 2022.

It has been funded by the council as part of a £65m investment programme of upgrades to the county’s sports and leisure facilities which will include new leisure centres in Berwick and Ponteland and refurbishments to existing centres in Blyth and Hexham.
