Chase European construction analyst Alastair Stewart came out clear winner in the 2000 Building share-tipping contest.
Stewart's tips, for construction group Peterhouse Group and materials firm Blue Circle Industries, rose by a combined 47.6% last year. Merrill Lynch analyst Mark Hake came second with 13.1% with shares in Taylor Woodrow, up 31.3%, and Ultraframe, down 5.2%.

Meanwhile in the readers' competition Robert Jackson came out as the top tipper with his choices making £31 780.

He had invested a notional £100 000 in shares chosen from those tipped by the five analysts in our fantasy share competition.

Jackson, a consultant with Davis Langdon Consultancy placed money in Peterhouse, Blue Circle and Ultraframe.

Runner-up was Jayne Townsend, contracts manager with facilities management firm Johnson Controls.

The top analyst and reader both won a magnum of champagne.
