The National Housing Federation is to amend its governance code to improve the way that housing associations communicate to tenants, after a high-profile commission launched a new governance standard for all public services on Tuesday.

The new standard was developed by a commission including members from the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy and the National Housing Federation.

The code includes a series of self-assessment questions for public bodies, such as whether their goals and values are clear.

Jim Coulter, NHF chief executive, said: “We shouldn’t underestimate the importance asking questions gives – it will wake up housing associations to what governance is all about.”
