The Empty Homes Agency is set to hold talks with the National Housing Federation about filling void properties more quickly.
Empty Homes Agency chief executive Jonathan Ellis said housing associations could use more Ministry of Defence properties. He said they were not using enough, despite the MoD being keen to work with them. Ellis will work with the federation to research the use of MoD stock by housing associations.

Laura Hare, policy officer at the London Housing Federation, said: “If people are to move home at all, you are bound to have about 2% of properties empty at any one time. So, we need to concentrate further improvements in the private sector. Housing associations are already working with private landlords to move people out of bed and breakfasts.”

This year, the number of empty homes in London fell below 100,000 for the first time, dropping 5063 to 99,737.

The Greater London Authority has called for full council tax to be charged on empty homes.
