Housebuilding in the north west should be cut by 15 per cent to boost inner city regeneration, the government said this week.
Regional planning guidance announced by junior housing minister Sally Keeble puts “comprehensive improvement of older and unpopular neighbourhoods” as the top priority.

She told the Commons that the number of new homes built each year should be cut from 15,000 to 12,800.

The brownfield land target is up from 65 per cent to 70 per cent but the government could take even further measures, Keeble said. She invited comments on the select committee proposal that no new building should be allowed on greenfield sites.

The final guidance will be issued in the autumn.
