Northern renaissance: John Prescott unveiled a plan to rejuvenate the North of England at an event held at the City of Manchester stadium on Monday.

Styled as the next step in the Communities Plan, launched 12 months ago this week, the "Northern Way" seeks to build an economic powerbase in the North to rival that of the South-east.

To support his vision, Prescott launched a document called Making it Happen: The Northern Way, which proposed two "northern growth corridors" stretching from Liverpool to Hull and from Sheffield to Newcastle.
