The University of Northumbria is spearheading an initiative to encourage companies to sponsor students on its integrated building services degree course.
Under the initiative companies can sponsor undergraduates or postgraduates through the entire course of their degree programme.

They can also host students on their placement year, sometimes sponsoring them afterwards, and with the possibility of a firm offer of employment at the end of the course.

Senior lecturer of building services at Northumbria University, Alan Brown, believes it is good for industry to work this way: "Sponsorship means companies can play a part in growing their own future with the professionals of tomorrow.

"It's a relatively small investment for a company but the pay-back is huge."
