Industry VIPs, David Holt, Chief Executive of the NSI, and Tim Geddes, Deputy Chairman of the BSIA, congratulated the group on their achievements.
NVQ Level 2 awards (presented by Tim Geddes) went to: Kevin Abbot (Majestic); Stephen Cook and Michael Gaul (Capstan); Niall Meagher (3D Security); Roland Mulhare (Essex); Barry Roberts (Secom); Gary Scott (London East Security Centre); Gary Strobel (Secom); Paul Thorogood (Phoenix); Darren Todd (Classic); and Steven Wilson (ADT).
NVQ Level 3 awards (presented by David Holt) went to James Oliver (Capstan) and Steven Wilson (ADT).
NVQ Level 3 and MA went to David Williams (ADT).
The Apprentice of the Year Awards 2001 were awarded to three apprentices (one in each year) who have put extra effort into their studies and made significant progress. Winners were:
First Year: Matthew Downs (CE Security) sponsored by NSI and presented by David Holt.
Second Year: Niall Meagher (3D Security) sponsored by Pyronix and presented by Ann-Marie Liddiard of the London East Learning and Skills Council.
Third Year: James Oliver (Classic Alarms) sponsored by BT RedCARE, and presented by George Mullaly, Chairman of SESCO.
In his keynote address Dr Holt said it was vital for the installation sector that more trained people should come through the system. He congratulated the installation companies in SESCO who had got together to tackle the skills shortage and had "distinguished themselves from their competitors."
On behalf of the BSIA Tim Geddes congratulated those companies in the south east who had formed the successful co-operative. Addressing the apprentices, he said that he had started out as an apprentice and went on to be a training officer: "At the beginning you are doing it because you have to. But when you get older you realise it is the foundation for your future."
Noel Sargent, National Training Programmes Manager at SITO said it had been gratifying to watch the co-operative grow.
