The Housing Ombudsman has marked its 10,000th case by asking a housing association to investigate the cramped conditions in which a couple and their three children are living.
The family is currently in a two-bedroom flat. Two of the children share a bedroom which only has space for bunk beds, a small wardrobe and drawers. The third child sleeps with the parents. Stairs cause a further problem for the mother, who has a bad back.

Ombudsman Dr Mike Biles has asked that the registered social landlord involved deal with the issue through its own internal complaints procedure as there is no immediate evidence the landlord has done anything wrong.

However, if the family's problems are not resolved the ombudsman will investigate whether there has been any maladministration in the way the tenancy has been managed.
