Baineport Engineering Services project managed the cable diversions for the city centre track installation on behalf of East Midlands Electricity. This was a task that required co-ordination with traffic management systems operators and utilities firms working in the same area, while working within strict health and safety regimes and tight timetables to minimise inner-city disruption.
As part of its £1 million contract, the firm diverted the 33 000 V, 11 000 V and 415 V power cables that supply the city, along the route of the track to ensure that they would not be affected when the tram tracks were laid. The cables had to be dropped to 1·5 m below ground level, twice their original depth.
Baineport has since won the contract to lay the cables for the trams. The main contractor on the project is Carillion.
The tram system is on track for the scheduled public opening in November 2003.
