I was interested to read your recent leader, IT: all part of the project?
(QS News, 13 May). I agree with your views on the impact of ICT within the construction industry and the lack of understanding in what most see as a black art.
ICT programmes are often delivered late, over-budget and rarely to the client’s satisfaction. A continuing problem is the existing ICT programme team structure; through our own work, we have found this to be the major problem with many projects.
It is fundamental to establish a clear decision making and reporting structure – and this requires a highly capable ICT programme manager at the top of the tree, supported by several deputies who in turn rely on the expertise of industry professionals such as Gardiner & Theobald. As IT budgets within construction projects continue to grow, it is vital to start from first principles, establish a clear reporting structure, employ capable IT professionals to manage the programme and harness the procurement, risk, change, cost and project management expertise of the construction industry. The client will then be well on the road to a successful project.
