Partnerships between the police and the security sector and the need for the industry to take a more pro-active role in how these partnerships develop was the main theme at the 3rd Annual Dinner of the Security Institute.
Institute patron, Sir John Stevens, Metropolitan Police Commissioner, said that while the police had once been sceptical about working with the security sector, he now believes that working together is the way forward: "For the security profession this is an opportunity."

Richard Childs, former Chief Cons-table of Lincolnshire said it was "inevit-able" that the private security sector would expand into areas that were seen as the responsibility of the police.

The security sector should play an active role in deciding what activities would be practical to undertake.

"There is a vacuum and it needs filling and, despite the rhetoric of politicians, the police are not going to be the ones to do it."
