Multi-disciplinary firm Pick Everard is to redevelop Franklin College after being commissioned under the Learning Skills Council (LSC) framework agreement.

The company was named lead architect and is also to provide services and structural design for the £35m project in Grimsby.

The new £1m fine art and photography building will remain but all the 1950s buildings - adapted from Chelmsford School when the college opened in 1990 - will be pulled down and turned into landscaped green space.

The consultancy says it will maximize natural light and ventilation and that a highly insulated thermal mass structure will act as a radiator, storing warmth within the fabric of the building.

The college will also use rainwater harvesting, a wind turbine, biomass boiler and solar hot water, and is aiming for a BREEAM rating of ‘Excellent.’
