She replaces Sebert Cox, the association’s longstanding chair.
Places for People was placed under supervision by the Housing Corporation last year after boardroom disputes (HT 17 October 2003, page 7).
Julia Middleton, who joined the association’s board at the corporation’s behest, said: “[Atkins] has an impressive track record in public services and a thorough understanding of the broad issues affecting social regeneration.”
More appointments to the board are expected within the next month.
