Plant costs

Since the last survey in September only London has seen an across the board price rise. In Exeter, Manchester and Sheffield there are some seasonal price increases for items such as floodlights and generators, which are up by as much as 30% since September's index. However prices for cranes and office huts are largely the same or, in some cases, lower. Skip prices have also fallen in a number of locations, including London. Prices for most items in Cardiff and Edinburgh have remained unchanged.

Floodlights
These are usually available off the shelf.

Generators
Prices are for a typical generator used with small tools or lighting. These are available off the shelf.

Mobile cranes
Rates are for 8-10 hours minimum hire and include 2-4 hours use on site. Overtime rates apply outside normal working hours at £8 per hour. Lodging allowances for drivers are at cost and a driver radius of up to 15 miles is charged at £10 per day and one of 15-30 miles at £18 per day. All rates shown are typical. Large hire firms can usually provide a crane of some description at 1 to 2 hours' notice, assuming that the site is within a reasonable distance of the yard.

Tower cranes
The rates shown are exclusive of power, erection and dismantling. The charges are based on a 50-hour week. The basic costs of the operator are included, but accommodation and travelling costs are extra.

Temporary water supply
Rates vary substantially from one water utility to another. Some authorities give quotations for individual projects. The Yorkshire Water Authority rate quoted excludes the hire of a stand pipe. There is a minimum charge of £25. Yorkshire Water requires up to six weeks to process applications. Other utilities may require different periods.

Access towers
Towers can usually be delivered in the afternoon if ordered in the morning.

Fencing
This can usually be delivered the day after ordering.

Skips
Most skip hirers will guarantee delivery and collection within 24 hours.

Site accommodation
Lead-in times vary according to accommodation. The minimum hire period is usually four weeks, with a discount available for long hire periods (more than six months). Erection and dismantling costs are excluded.

Chemical toilets
Delivery is usually within 24-48 hours. Rates for basic and flushing toilets include weekly service and emptying. VIP models do not include the service charge.
