The remote monitoring system allows ACF to know where every handler is at any one time and, what's more, to know how the engine is running. Vehicles, some worth as much as £70,000, are fitted with a device the size of a small desktop calculator, which uses satellite Differential Global Positioning System (DGPS) to provide ACF with a picture of where everything is.
The service is provided by Global Telematics, which mans a round-the-clock response centre. Global Telematics captures the data and makes it available to ACF through the Internet.
It has made ACF more competitive, allowing it to drop contract hire prices from £225 to £154. It also allowed ACF to stop a scam in which a vehicle was being used to load stolen equipment.
