Sussex Custodial Service, a consortium comprising Ballast, Reliance Secure Task Management and Charterhouse Project Equity Investments, has been awarded a £90m PFI contract by Sussex Police Authority.
The 30-year contract to provide and manage police custody facilities and services also includes three purpose-built custody centres along the UK's south coast.

Ballast will complete two elements of the project — the design and build of custody centres in Worthing, Chichester and Eastbourne and the refurbishment of a warehouse in Brighton, which will be converted into custody centre. This part of the contract has been valued at an estimated £16m.

Reliance Secure Task Management will provide full facilities management services over the contract period, including a fully integrated electronic security package and the latest CCTV technology. Reliance will also continue to manage six other custody centres in Sussex as part of a separate 'early services' agreement.

Other services under the contract, which will start in July 2002 include, custody and ID staff, forensic medical services and interpreters will be provided.
