Berkeley Homes is applying PPG3 on a large scale with its £200m, 550-home Knowle Village scheme, near Winchester in Hampshire.
The scheme will see the regeneration of the former Knowle Hospital site into a settlement for 1500 people with homes, business premises, shops and leisure facilities.

Berkeley has worked with architect Architecture plb to design the scheme around two public squares, North Square and South Square (pictured). North Square is bordered by a key existing building and will have new townhouses and apartments. South Square is the retail and leisure focus of the village. The central area formed by the two squares will have a density well in excess of PPG3 requirements. Around the two squares and converted buildings, Berkeley will be building a variety of units, including apartments, houses, villas and cottages. "By building this new urban village, the company is demonstrating that Berkeley Homes has the ability to undertake sophisticated London style regeneration projects outside the capital," said Karl Whiteman, managing director of Berkeley's Hampshire region. Berkeley estimates it will take five years to complete and has just released the first four and five-bed units for sale at prices of £250 000 to £450 000.
