October’s manager of the month competition was a very close contest. Emerging victorious was Darenth Reds, managed by Pilkington employee, Aidan Cox
Darenth Reds had a very productive month and scooped an impressive 185 points for October alone. Aidan Cox’s team beat off the ferocious challenge of 11 Pot Luck Losers who finished October just seven points behind Darenth Reds, and The Wednesday, who finished the month in third with 173 points.
Aidan, an accountant who works at Pilkington Glazing in Bermondsey, South London, is a relative newcomer to the game and didn’t enter a team until after the season started. Proof that you don’t have to have enter at the outset to win the monthly prize. Aidan will be treating himself and his girlfriend to a weekend away to a Marriot Hotel of his choice.
Aidan has resorted to some interesting tactics in his pursuit of glory. The canny Liverpool fan kept a close eye on fixtures and second-guessed the results. He was able to manipulate the transfers to his advantage and happily tinker his way to glory. Sam Allardyce would have been proud.
Aidan has therefore gone for some unheralded players such as Charles N’Zogbia and Steve Carr of Newcastle United. With the Magpies revitalised, Darenth Reds rose to the top. With Middlesbrough hitman Yakubu leading the frontline and bagging four goals against Aston Villa, Portsmouth and Man United in the month, Aidan’s talent spotting was ‘spot on’ and further upped the points tally. Aidan has also been brave enough to ride on the crest of Wigan’s wave as he’s plumped for Damian Francis, the goal-getting Latics midfielder.
Somewhat surprised at his victory, Aidan comments: ‘I’ve been playing a game of catch-up as I didn’t enter a team at the start, but it shows that if you have a really good month you can still come out on top.
‘We have a mini-league set up in the office so I suffered a little bit to begin with as I lagged behind some of my work colleagues. However, by carefully checking forthcoming fixtures I’ve been able to plan which players are likely to earn maximum points over the weekend.
‘Winning the manager of the month has only upped the banter a further notch or two and I’ve received plenty of stick. But my strategy is working so far and I can hopefully continue this hot streak.
I just hope a bit of my luck rubs off on Liverpool
‘I just hope a bit of my luck rubs off on Liverpool and they start to climb the table as well.’ Points to ponder as you ponder those points:
Over 1,000 teams are taking part, but the Premier Allstars have continued their excellent start to the season and currently occupy top spot. Challenging Premier Allstars’ supremacy is We’re Not From London You and Donsons Devils.
Playing the game couldn’t be easier. With a £100million burning a hole in your pocket, pick the right formation, get the most points on the board and you will be heading off for a luxury break as a manager of the month to a Marriott Hotel.
The manager who accumulates the most points over the the season will win a trip for two to any sporting event of their choice.
