As well as the Audit Commission and right-to-buy announcements, the deputy prime minister’s conference address included a number of other pledges on housing-related issues.

They included:

  • councils “with a proven record” to get new borrowing powers to invest in local communities
  • legislation to allow English regions to decide on devolution
  • government to stamp out “exploitation” by unscrupulous private landlords
  • Audit Commission to take over inspections from the Housing Corporation
  • Housing Corporation to play “major role” in delivery of 250,000 new homes in the South-east.
