The announcement of the approval for the development phase of SummitSkills, the Sector Skills Council for the electrotechnical and wider building services industries is to be warmly welcomed.
This is a pan-industry initiative that the ECA has developed together with the other trade associations active in the building services sector to take responsibility for the development of the full range of required skills and qualifications. In particular, it will take forward the excellent work undertaken by NET, integrating electrical skills with the training development of other building services trades.

At a time when skills shortages continue to make the headlines, SummitSkills shows that the building services sector is taking positive steps to work together to address the issue through improved training efficiency and the creation of coherent career paths.

Another major issue for our sector is the anticipated Government announcement concerning Part P of the Building Regulations. ECA has long campaigned for the statutory support of the IEE Wiring Regulations (BS 7671) and the Government's proposals, if implemented, would formally recognise BS 7671 as providing the basis for complying with Part P, effectively curbing the activities of unqualified and incompetent installers.
