Doors that look frameless

Glass UK’s Sheerglaze door technology gives designers the potential to create a glass facade that appears frameless. Sheerglaze doors have an aluminium frame sandwiched between two sheets of toughened glass. This both gives a high degree of rigidity to the door construction and ensures that no part of the frame protrudes beyond the plane of the glass surface. Each unit is hermetically sealed using structural silicone for excellent thermal and acoustic performance. The range includes sliding, pivot, hinged and sliding/folding/stacking door options.

Floor insulation

The floor slab of a 200-year-old house in Germany is being insulated with Styrodur C, BASF’s extruded polystyrene rigid foam. To insulate the floor, 10cm thick Styrodur C panels are laid, a vapour-barrier film is placed over them and they are covered with concrete. The panels are being laid as part of a project to show how an existing house can be upgraded to consume 87% less energy than a new-build house.

Moisture-resistant particleboard

Engineered wood-based panel manufacturer Norbord has supplied its Caberdek moisture-resistant particleboard for a 532-home mixed-tenure development in Stepney, east London. The scheme, by Bellway Homes and East Choice Housing, is being constructed using timber frame components from Stewart Milne Timber Systems. The particleboard gives additional protection against the effects of water ingress and is resistant even when exposed to the elements during construction. A waterproof slip-resistant film protects the board until the building is weather-proofed.
