Products from 12 shortlisted finalists are lining up to take this year's top product honours at the Security Industry Awards, sponsored by the BSIA, at IFSEC 2001
The 12 products described below were voted the best of many submissions for the prestigious awards which are a highlight of the annual Security Industry Dinner.

Six winners from this list will be announced on the night of May 21 at the event at the Metropole Hotel, Birmingham, and one company will walk away with the overall winners trophy.

A team of judges from the industry awarded points for use of technology, value for money, meeting user needs and "star quality". Categories covered CCTV, Access Control, Intruder Alarms and Services.

The 12 shortlisted companies and products are (in alphabetical order)
Baxall for the CDX 9714 camera which has a variety of sophisticated features including peak white inversion and configurable back light compensation enabling, the camera to produce images in changing light situations such as on highways, where headlamps can "blind" cameras.

BPT Security Systems for the Nova , said to be the smallest door entry control monitor in the industry that can be flushed into the wall, offering a discreet form of surveillance. Designed for commercial and domestic premises where appearance is important, the Nova is connected to an entry control panel adjacent to the door, gate or barrier. (This product was bench tested in Security Installer, Feb 2001).

CEM Systems for the EtherProx Card Reader, said to be the industry's smallest proximity card reader/controller to include an LCD display and keypad and an Ethernet connection. An embedded web server allows the user to access the EtherProx from any remote computer or company intranet computer.

Detection Systems for Netcom, a combination hardware/software product compatible with installed digital dialler-based alarm panels.

It provides global coverage via the internet allowing alarm panels to send full data messages via both local and wide area networks.

Dedicated Micros for the Digital Sprite Lite, an "easy to use and install" package bringing together digital multiplexing recording and network video transmission. Developed to look and feel like an analogue multiplexer, all recordings are accessible to the user at the touch of a button, delivering a system that removes tape management issues. (This product was bench tested in Security Installer, October 2000).

Derwent Systems for the EX38 Night Vision which combines five separate features into one plug-and-play unit, saving on cost and installation time. It includes camera, lens, housing, illumination and bracketry and is designed for 24-hour coverage in a variety of lighting conditions including complete darkness.

Tecsec Europe for the Sherpa surveillance system for rapid deployment of CCTV. The system has a positioning device, camera platform and control unit. The positioning module ascends and descends posts, adjusting to different profiles and carrying the platform to its desired position. The camera locks to the post and the module descends leaving the camera behind. Camera features are controlled by a hand-held unit.

Network Video Technologies for its Unshielded Twisted Pair video transceivers allowing high quality, real time video and audio over unshielded twisted pair cable.

Said to be easy to install and terminate, the product is a alternative to coax or fibre.

Neurodynamics for NVisage, a fully 3D facial recognition product for access control that builds an entire 3D mask of the face and then matches it according to similarity between masks. It uses patterned light and neural network software to identify individuals and is suitable for use in football stadia retail/club security, hotels, restaurants etc.

TSSI for EnGuard, an integrated access control package offering fingerprint verification with the option of template storage on a card, together with an ID card management package. It is targeted at sites that need a high level security system that is easy to use.

Video Domain for MemoCam, a palm-sized device that allows recording of events on motion detection and stores them for later analysis. It is said to be a complete stand-alone CCTV system in one, including CCD camera, video compression engine, memory card module, PIR detector and serial communication. It is suitable for unattended sites where the required number of attached cameras might need to be increased.

Visonic for PowerMax, a wireless security system designed for the domestic market with consumer ease of use in mind and fast, easy installation. It uses voice prompts to take the user through the system.

It has a "latchkey" child monitor mode telling parents when children are home, wristband multi-function panic button and allows operation of lighting, heating and cooling systems.

Each of the above products will be featured in a graphic display on the BSIA stand (stand A110) at IFSEC 2001 (May 21-24).
