World first?
Mobotix is claiming a world first: a weatherproof 'megapixel' IP/ISDN camera equipped with two image sensors and two lenses. The M10-Day/Night camera's new Megapixel sensor (1280 x 960) is said to be a huge leap compared to the proven colour quality of all Mobotix cameras to date and features a light sensitivity ten times higher than the present models.

Depending on the illumination of the scene, the camera uses either the colour image sensor with daylight lens or the black and white image sensor with infrared lens to record images. This dual sensor system provides for 'excellent' colours during the day and high-quality images of dark scenes.

At half the image rate, both sensor images can be processed in parallel and can be displayed either side-by-side or picture-in-picture. In static scenes, the colour image sensor's night vision mode allows for exposure times of one second without perceivable image noise. This will deliver high-quality colour images even in the dark.

The camera automatically adapts to difficult backlight situations. Since the camera has two lenses – one for daylight and one for night – and they can be focused separately, expensive IR-corrected lenses are not needed.

Well caught!
NEC's 60SmartCatch Vision is real time Video Intelligence Software that detects, tracks and identifies active and static objects within video streams. SmartCatch is being used at San Francisco International Airport and NEC is talking to transport authori-ties throughout the UK with a view to getting the technology installed.

SmartCatch Vision enables a user to quickly identify areas of interest and define suspicious objects and be-haviours.

For example, the user can specify that objects entering a region of interest should trigger a warning alert, relieving the human burden of continually watching that area.

Examples of user-configured events that can be detected and tracked by the system include:

  • Unattended baggage
  • Unidentified person bypassing a security gate
  • Unidentified person in an unauthorised area
  • Unattended vehicles
  • Unidentified person entering a restricted area and leaving an object behind
  • Unidentified person disappearing behind parked cars for a specific period of time
  • A person or vehicle moving against normal traffic patterns.

Identifying vehicles
Telindus-owned CellStack Systems – providers of networked CCTV to the transportation market – has added Automatic Number Plate Recognition to its portfolio.

Talon ANPR, produced by Appian, provides rapid identification of vehicles 24 hours a day, in all weather conditions.

The product identifies and recognises number plate information with scope for integration into databases of number plates.

ANPR has now been integrated with the CellStack Vision software, part of the CellStack Integration Suite. The digital quality video data is then fed from Vision into the Appian Talon ANPR product.

Commercial applications for this technology include car park management, estate management and journey time analysis. In all applications, each recognised vehicle has a time/date and location number associated with it, together with an associated image. The networking capability of the system allows comprehensive database traffic movement to be created and maintained.

Analogue to IP
Sony's SNT-V501 and SNT-V504 video network stations make it possible to connect a traditional analogue video camera to an IP network. The units offer a cost-effective solution to network integrators and installers in upgrading existing CCTV systems to become fully networked video systems.

The compact stations enable a single analogue video camera to be remotely monitored and controlled over a TCP/IP network.

The units convert existing analogue video into digital MJPEG, providing a high-refresh rate of 25 fps in VGA resolution.

Or in the case of the SNT-V504, 25 fps in 320 x 240 resolution per camera input.

The units thus provide the ability to monitor smooth, near-motion images using a standard web browser or application software.

The frame rate can be set to a fixed or variable frame rate, which is automatically adjusted according to the available bandwidth.

The stations are equipped with a 100Base-TX/10Base-T (RJ-45) interface and a built-in web server.

Access control
Install in doorframe
Era has launched an electronic multi-point lock for main entry doors. Innovative technology harnesses high security with ease of use.

When the door is closed it locks automatically and stays locked as dead bolts fire into the doorframe keeps. The lock can be unlocked using one of the three electronic trigger options available.

For example, a vandal-proof proximity reader is installed into either the doorframe or the wall next to the door (pictured above).

Dave Tiller of Era commented: "It couldn't be simpler to open the door. With no key to turn or external handle to engage, the locking system is foolproof. The new system can be either fitted to a new door or as a retro-fit to upgrade existing door security. In the unlikely event of a power failure the lock can be operated by a traditional key."

Needs less power
Codelocks has launched the Codelocks 5000 electronic, designed and engineered in the UK. Using piezo technology "for the first time in an electronic lock" provides a much longer battery life of 500,000 operations, compared to around 80,000 in a typical electronic push button lock.

This innovative use of technology in the clutch mechanism overcomes the previous battery life limitations in standalone electronic touch button locks. Apart from the benefits of low power consumption, the reliability and durability of the piezo clutch make it a suitable choice for the future development of electronic standalone access control.

Traditionally, electric push button locks would either incorporate a solenoid or motor to engage the lock, requiring much higher levels of power. This new latch mechanism is said to require 66 times less power.

Security is everyone’s concern

Siemens Building Technologies has launched TELSCAN, bringing CCTV to the desktop. The system converts analogue video from CCTV cameras to TCP/IP over Ethernet so that all that is needed at the viewing end is a standard PC and web browser.

This efficient use of IT technology means that CCTV images can be broadly distributed within an organisation, facilitating innovative usage and enhancing standard applications.

The main consideration for launching TELSCAN is the better use of existing technology investments and the freeing up of dedicated security roles. It transmits and views images across the entire network, making security everyone’s concern.

The web server is a compact standalone device that allows full motion CCTV to be transmitted using industry standard M-JPEG compression, and stills using JPEG compression, over Ethernet. The frame rate is 25 per second.
