Access Control
Door panel to phone interface
As part of a new or existing door entry system, Videx VTS 106/108 PABX switchboard interface units can accept either one or two one-button door panel intercoms, allowing them to be connected to either six or eight telephone extensions via the PABX switchboard.
The units can be used in conjunction with Videx door panels as a solution for large domestic installations and small offices, the firm says.
A call from the door entry panel at the main entrance can ring any or all of the connected internal telephones dependent upon programming. Once a call has been accepted, all other telephones on the system are available for interconnection or for making and receiving an external call.
When a call from the door panel is accepted, the door can be opened via the telephone handset.

Remote activations
Send Technology’s GSMRemote is a device enabling multiple, authorised users to remotely open and close their car park barriers, security gates etc at home, or ‘unlock’ the door to the office.
By using a caller line identification presentation (clip) feature, when you ring the unit the GSMRemote checks to see if the calling number is listed in its phone book and if so it switches on its output, which in turn operates the gate or door control system.
A single changeover relay allows the device to be switched on and then off by consecutive calls, or to be active for a time period of 1-10 seconds. Use of the clip feature means your call does not connect and you aren’t charged for it.
Security is provided by the unit operating only if the user’s phone number is in its own phone book.
A text message can also be sent back to the user to confirm the action.

Access via your home phone
TelGuard has expanded its range of units which provide secure door and gate entry via existing home phones (including mobiles) without costly hard-wiring. Two new models, the 121 and MiniTel, are both 40mm deep at the faceplate.
The 121 separates the entry panel and the active microprocessor controls and incorporates technology allowing it to link directly with the user’s homephone on the existing telephone line. When the entry request is made at the panel a different ringtone on the handset sounds, or if it is in use a ‘beep’. The model, with up to four programmed call buttons, has a number of other options aimed at the residential and light commercial markets.
Meanwhile, the MiniTel separates a faceplate from the pcb and other electronics. This makes it suitable for door locations where space is at a premium and appearance important, the company reports. The unit can accommodate CCTV, proximity reader and coded entry.

Alarms
‘Smart’ alarm management
Hi Sec International, which provides ‘smart’ products that integrate data networks with intelligent access, intrusion and video modules, has launched its ThorGuard security management system.
This web enabled software management tool, which supports SQL for database interrogation, is said to enable IT managers to introduce an integrated security management system onto the network that encompasses all the monitoring, control and reporting facilities required.
Connected to separate ThorGuard access control and intruder alarm systems, the new system can integrate with any networked database to perform real-time alarm monitoring, access control and reporting functions.
Hi Sec points out that the new system retains its independence from software: using distributed intelligence card readers, it can transfer the database independently from the management system. Alternatively, by using a third party host interface, it can extract data directly to the database – providing a disaster-proof security solution able to operate independently, even when the network itself is shut down, the firm adds.

Add-on personal alarm
Visonic’s recently launched personal alert kit can easily be added by installers to an existing or new hard-wired system, the firm reports. Worn by belt clip or as a neck pendant, the waterproof kit works on a single button press.
Operating on the 868 MHz frequency dedicated to security systems, and using an MCR 304 hybrid receiver, the transmitter connects to a control panel which can then raise an audible alarm. Where the system is connected to a telephone line, the system can trigger a message requesting assistance to several different pre-programmed phone numbers such as the ambulance service or a monitoring station.

Fire control panels debut
Notifier’s new NFS2-8 conventional fire control panel range is designed for applications such as offices, retail units, bars, restaurants, schools, nursing homes, small hotels and other similar commercial premises. Designed to EN54 parts 2 and 8, the NFS2-8 2, 4 and 8-zone system is said to incorporate functionality normally provided by larger, addressable systems.
A day/night mode delay switch gives trained staff time to investigate an alarm when the building is occupied, while operation of a manual call point instigates an immediate alarm at any time. At night, the system can be set to initiate immediately both local and remote alarms.
72 hour battery back-up means the fire protection system will remain operational if power to the premises is interrupted. For installers, the NFS2-8 is claimed to offer compatibility with virtually all detectors on the market.

Expandable electro-lock
A new electronic lock, the ELS 999, has been launched by DOM [part of Black & Decker]. It’s operated by stand-alone transponder, which can be hand-held or fitted to a conventional DOM mechanical key. The integral electronics immediately activate the knob to turn and open the door, unlike existing time-delay versions which require a short wake-up time.
The supplier says the system’s benefits are of interest where different level of security and varying access permissions are required. Depending on the requirements, the locking system can be programmed with a card, hand-held programmer unit or via a PC.
Unlike mechanical locking systems, the ELS 999 can be expanded or changed to operate different functions. It’s also suitable for use with individual doors, as well as complex master key and multi-door use.

Day-night bullet cameras
Stortech Electronics says it’s enhanced the performance of its PC60 range of day-night bullet cameras in variable light conditions. The units are described as suitable for internal or external applications.
The PC60LT and high-res PC60HLT incorporate an infra-red blocking filter for daylight colour pictures and [automatically switched] mono images when ambient light conditions fall – detected using a light dependent resistor in parallel with the video signal level’s reduction.
This combination, together with solenoid switching of the IR blocking filter and an increase from 12 to 18 in the number of LEDs , is how performance has been improved. During mono operation, for instance, the LEDs illuminate an area of 10 metres from the lens.

Viewing backlit images
A pcb camera designed to address the problem of viewing an image in strong backlight conditions has been produced by Stortech Electronics. The CB80HWT uses what’s called wide dynamic range technology to ‘read’ information from both light and dark areas at the same time and combine the two different images in a single scene.
A Sony CCD/WDR CX3151 chip provides the processing capability required to achieve this. When ambient light becomes insufficient to support colour operation, the optical filter is removed via a solenoid switch and the camera reverts to mono operation.
Resolution is 450 tvl for colour and 560 tvl for mono. Light sensitivity is quoted as 1.0 and 0.4 lux respectively.

Long-range zoom lenses
Fujinon has introduced two new long-range zoom lenses, the C22x23 one-inch format lens and the D60x12.5 telephoto model. Both feature iris override and day/night capability within an extended focal length lens, it’s reported.
The lenses are designed for applications such as long-range surveillance needs of government, sea-port and airport agencies. The C22x23 has a 500mm focal length and range of 23-506mm, but provides more telephoto capability despite using the same size lens as its C22x17 predecessor [which offered a 17-374mm zoom range].
Because of its extended focal range this lens doesn’t require a 2x extender, providing sharper, faster and brighter images. Meanwhile, the half-inch format D60x12.5 lens offers a focal length range of 12.5-1500mm.
The iris override function on both lenses allows operators to manually control iris adjustments.

Holding open fire doors
Fireco has added to its Dorgard range of wire-free door hold-open devices by adding a unit designed specifically for noisy environments. The new radio-activated device is said to solve the problem of busy service areas and communal interiors, which generate high levels of background noise that could drown out the sounding of a fire alarm.
Dorgard units are described as cost effective ways of legally holding open fire doors safely because they don’t have to be wired in; and because the doorstop is battery operated and fixed to the door itself the device can hold the door open at any angle (the battery lifetime exceeds regulatory fire safety policy directives, Fireco notes).
Quoted installation time is some five minutes per door. A Dorgard radio transmitter, with a 30 metres range, is sited beside the fire bell or sounder. Upon identifying the specific alarm annunciation, the transmitter automatically signals to the Dorgard receiver to release the fire door to close.

Plug ’n’ play fibre optics
Auriga Europe, a distributor of structured cabling, networking systems and accessories, says its new Optronics MPO system allows a fibre optic system to be installed without needing specialised consumables, tools or knowledge.
The ‘plug and play’ system is said to do away with the need to splice, cleave, fuse and polish fibre optic connections, since all cable assemblies are pre-terminated. At its heart is a 12-core MPO traditional round cable that feeds into MPO connectors at either end. These backbone cables [available in lengths from 25-200 metres] can be used in riser or computer room applications.
MPO fan-outs allow conversion between MPO and more typical SC, ST, FC, LC or MT-RJ fibre optic connections. “This new system is ideal when a network needs to be deployed quickly,” says Auriga.
