SCORE (Sports Club Orient) in London

WHAT: A sports, health and community centre in Leyton, East London, which will act as a training base for the 2012 Olympics and be open to local residents. It uses solar power to generate close to all the energy needed to power the complex year round. Excess electricity generated in the summer will be sold to the National Grid to offset the extra energy needed in winter.

HOW MUCH: £9.3m, of which £2m was spent on indoor facilities.

WHO: QS: Dobson White Boulcott, client: English Partnerships, architect: Penoyre & Prasad, contractor: Jackson Construction,

PM: Dearle & Henderson.

WHEN: DWB worked on this project from November 2003 until July 2005.

CONTRACT: JCT 1998 design and build.

SIZE & SHAPE: The scheme covers two sites over 7.3 ha.

FACILITIES: All-weather surfaces for football and tennis, plus in-door spaces for tennis, netball, basketball, handball and volleyball. Plus community and medical centre.

QS VIEW: “The new provision includes a community building offering childcare, meeting spaces and community health facilities. This, alongside all-weather football and tennis surfaces, multi-use games area, playground and bowls green, makes this a venue that is both leading edge and ahead of the curve, and moreover one which East London can be proud of” – Darren Buckley, senior cost consultant, DWB.

BACKGROUND: Sports Club Orient is an umbrella trust which will manage the Score Project now it is completed. It comprises members from Leyton Orient Community Sports Programme, O-Regen, London Borough of Waltham Forest, community and sports users groups and the Leyton Neighbourhood Forum.
