Police Forces throughout the UK have endorsed the UK Biometrics fingerprint entry system as a "foolproof means of curbing underage drinking and antisocial behaviour".
The system means that customer do not need to carry valuable ID with them. Instead, they present photographic ID once, and thereafter simply scan their fingerprint. UK Biometrics says over 30,000 users can be added to or deleted from the system, with individual registration taking as little as 30 seconds.
Newcastle City Commander, Chief Superintendent Chris Matchell, said: "I think it is an absolutely brilliant idea. It is a very responsible scheme, demonstrating that the licensed trade is taking under-age drinking seriously and protecting people from having to carry around proper ID all the time. These things do get lost and clearly people do not want to lose their passport." The system can be operated independently at one venue or cover a number of venues.
