CIBSE and BRE are holding a conference on the new Energy Performance of Buildings Directive and its likely impact on the construction industry, when it becomes a legal requirement in the UK three years from now.
The conference, organised jointly with the Institute of Energy will take place at BRE, Garston on 29 October. It will review the requirements of the directive which include minimum energy performance targets (for new and existing buildings); regular mandatory inspection of boilers and air conditioning systems; and the energy certification of all buildings.
In theory, the directive offers a significant opportunity to achieve a substantial reduction in energy use in buildings. However, David Strong, managing director of BRE's energy division says: "Major issues remain to be resolved regarding implementation of the directive. This conference provides an opportunity for informed debate."
