Known as the 'Gateway to the Dales', the market town of Skipton in north Yorkshire has become one of the latest towns to benefit from the introduction of Quadrant Video CCTV

Conceived as the result of the biggest ever community safety review and consultation exercise undertaken in the Craven district, the £170,000 CCTV town centre surveillance scheme in Skipton, north Yorkshire has been designed to tackle local crime and disorder – while helping to reduce the 'fear' of crime among visitors and workers alike.

Installed and commissioned by Quadrant Video Systems, the set-up makes use of fibre optic cabling and high resolution colour cameras, deployed throughout in 'Heritage'-style dome housings. Supplying evidential-quality pictures, the CCTV system provides surveillance coverage of the town's main entry and exit routes, the high street, car parks, main bus terminal and the canal basin area.

The Skipton scheme is monitored and controlled from the nearby Borough Council-operated CCTV Control Room in Harrogate, supported by a direct communications link to an additional camera selection and monitoring facility within Skipton's own police station.

As a way of enhancing still further the CCTV system's capabilities, a number of other security-related initiatives have been introduced. For instance, a 'Radiolink' system enables town centre stores and shops to communicate directly with the police, allowing the identification and tracking of known offenders. There are also several 'Help Points' linked to camera pre-sets.
