Figures released by the DTI reveal that 250 firms are now part of the government backed Quality Mark Scheme.
Designed to stamp out the cowboys, the scheme is a register of reputable builders and associated trade firms.

In addition to the 250 firms registered, another 349 are in the process of joining the scheme. The website, a main storefront for the scheme, has had over 53 000 hits to date from members of the public.

Construction minister Brian Wilson said: "The growing popularity of the scheme is directly attributable to the way firms are recognising they can stay ahead of the game, maintain an edge over their competitors and help transform the perceptions that have been dragging the industry down."

m Elland Road, home of Leeds United, was the setting for introduction of the Quality Mark to West Yorkshire. Over 140 people attended to hear about the scheme that is being rolled out across England and Wales. Nottinghamshire is next to roll out.
