English Partnerships is to spend £154.6m on saving hundreds of homes in Bath from collapsing into abandoned mines.
The ODPM announced the funding on Wednesday following concerns that about 350 private homes housing about 1500 people were located on “thin crusts” of ground, which were in some places only a few metres thick.
The homes are situated above the Combe Down Stone Mines, from which stone was excavated for the building of the city. During the last three years, an interim EP grant of £23m has been spent on emergency work to stabilise the work in the worst affected areas.
The council said it was “delighted” with the support.
